Cristiano Ronaldo should have gone out of Brazil 2014 – and perhaps from the World Cup forever – with a hat-trick at the very least.

That was no less than this Portuguese man o' war deserved for the command performance he gave here on football's greatest stage.

Instead he had to settle for one, winning goal and as it happened a couple more would have made no difference to the timing of his departure.
